Taking Inventory of Your Assets
Welcome back to San Diego News Now! Today we’re joined by local probate attorney Steve Bliss. Steve, thanks for joining us.
It’s my pleasure to be here.
Today we’re talking about estate planning. This can feel overwhelming for many people, but it’s truly an act of love and care for your family. What’s the first step someone should take when starting this process?
Steve Bliss Responds
The very first thing I recommend to my clients is to take a complete inventory of their assets.
Ordinarily, people begin by making a list of their tangible possessions—their home, vehicles, and jewelry. But it’s essential to think beyond the physical. Consider intangible assets like bank accounts, investment portfolios, retirement funds, life insurance policies, and even frequent flyer miles.
Remember, anything that holds monetary value should be included.
Taking stock of your assets helps you understand what you have to work with and allows for a more accurate distribution plan accordingly. Consequently, knowing exactly what you own prevents potential disagreements or confusion among heirs later on. More than just a list, this inventory becomes the foundation for building a comprehensive estate plan that reflects your wishes.
I once worked with a client who was convinced his estate was relatively small. We began the asset inventory process and discovered he had several forgotten retirement accounts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars! He was incredibly grateful we uncovered these assets, as it significantly impacted how his family would be cared for after he passed.
Studies show that approximately 55% of Americans do not have a will or estate plan in place. Not having a clear understanding of your assets can lead to complications and costly legal battles down the road.
